Loopt er in 2100 geen enkele roodharige meer rond?
In het onderzoeksinstituut 'Oxford Hair Foundation', gespecialiseerd in haarproblemen, denken ze dat alvast. Slechts 4% van de wereldbevolking heeft het roodhaar-gen. Als de dragers ervan kinderen op de wereld zetten die het sterkere bruinhaar-gen hebben, wordt het roodharige gen verdrongen. Zo zullen in 100 jaar tijd alle roodharigen uitsterven
Toch stellen wetenschappers vraagtekens bij de berekeningen van het onderzoeksinstituut. Het bruinhaar-gen kan inderdaad het rosse verdringen, maar een roodharig koppel kan bijvoorbeeld een kind krijgen met bruin haar, maar dat kind kan perfect drager blijven van het roodhaar-gen, aldus geneticus Jean-Jacques Cassiman van de KULeuven. De kans is dan ook reëel dat die later een roodharig kind op de wereld zet. Soms slaat dat roodhaar-gen dus enkele generaties over. Sommige mensen zijn er zelfs drager van zonder dat ze ooit een familielid met rood haar gekend hebben.
Roodharige vrouwen in het bijzonder worden aanbeden om hun bijna doorzichtige huid, schattige sproetjes en sensuele aantrekkingskracht. Mannen met rood haar worden eerder het onderwerp van spot: met de term 'vuurtoren' weet iedereen wie er wordt bedoeld.Of je het mooi vindt of niet, rood haar zal de komende jaren een zeldzaamheid worden. Het aantal rossige mensen is de afgelopen 50 jaar al flink afgenomen. Een trend die zich de komende eeuw zal doorzetten. Momenteel is in de westerse wereld tussen de 1 en 2 procent van de bevolking roodharig, alleen Kelten in Ierland en Schotland komen tot 8 procent.
A 2002 study found that redhead are harder to sedate than any other people requiring twenty percent more anesthesia. Inadequate doses cause people to wake up during surgery and have increased recall of procedures.
Belief that redheads are witches is a folk belief in Germanic culture. From 1483-1784 thousands of suspected witches were nearly always stripped and searched for “marks of the devil”. These included any “abnormality” such as freckles, moles, warts, and birthmarks. Red hair was certainly considered an abnormality. Considering the freckle factor for redheads this was a deadly and shocking horror. Somewhere around 45,000 women were tortured and murdered usually by burning at the stake or by drowning.

A redhead brings the worst luck. This “first footing” custom was so strongly practiced at one time that some homes would hire first callers.

Roodharigen zullen enkel uitsterven als het klimaat in de westerse landen plots hetzelfde zal zijn zoals in Afrika. Roodharigen hebben namelijk een gen dat geen bruinpigment aanmaakt, waardoor ze heel gevoelig zijn voor zonlicht. In zwart Afrika konden die op die manier niet overleven, zodat door natuurlijke selectie vooral in de koelere landen veel roodharigen voorkomen. Maar dat er de volgende 100 jaren zo'n klimaatsverandering aankomt, betwijfel ik
Migratie
Het 'uitsterven' van de roodharige mensensoort is te wijten aan de hoge migratie en de hiermee gepaard gaande vermenging van verschillende rassen. Wetenschappers zien dit als een ontwikkeling die niet tegen te gaan is. Ook natuurlijk blond haar wordt zeldzamer. Van de Britse vrouwen is slechts 3 procent echt blond, de rest haalt haar kleur uit een flesje. De lichte haarsoort is een van de grootste evolutionaire mysteries. Hoewel de mensheid zich in Afrika ontwikkelde, zijn blonde en roodharige mensen pas voorgekomen in Europa, ongeveer 20.000 jaar geleden. Om rood haar te krijgen zijn zes specifieke genen nodig, waarvan elke ouder er één moet leveren. De kans op rood haar is dus erg klein.
